Cyanobacteria Information
Dear Landowners:
A number of landowners have reached out to the District with questions about Cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) blooms and toxicity in the Grasslands. We have not observed any blooms or toxicity in the District historically and the blooms found recently in San Luis Reservoir pose no threat to hunters, dogs or wildlife in the GRCD. Although the Grassland Water District may receive water from San Luis Reservoir in certain year types, the vast majority of Grassland Water District flood-up water supply demands are made directly from the Delta through the Delta-Mendota Canal. The cool overnight lows during flood up and flow through condition of the ponds are also not conducive for blue-green algae blooms. Please find attached a simple test that can be used in the event you observe an algae bloom in your ponds, which may help you determine if it is blue-green algae. The District is not an environmental health agency. However, if you suspect you may have a toxic algae bloom please avoid contact with the water (including pets) and notify the District at 209-675-0924.
Thank you,
Ric Ortega, General Manager
